Another SWAMBC tug towing competition round!

At the SWAMBC AGM it was decided that the second round of next years 2007 tug towing is to be held by the Newquay club at Silver mine lake, Crealy park Cornwall on the 22nd of July. The skippers meeting is at 10:30am entry costs £2 (this is to cover the cost of prizes) and is open to people with membership to a club associated with SWAMBC. Spectators are welcome to come along free of charge. This will be the third round we have organised and I think we should have a good turn out for this event and hope that we can attract some members of local clubs, who maybe have not tried it before. The main objective is to have fun, so come and have a go . If you are interested in this or anything else on the website send me an Email or call and ask for Phil, contact details are on the join the club page.

SWAMBC tug towing 2006

Round 1

Once again the intrepid explorers at Newquay set off for the first round of tug towing at Exeters Crealy ready to face another Dave Aylott task, made all the more difficult by the stiff breeze. Still we got on quite well. In singles towing Margaret Winnett got 6th place, Chris Poulter came 5th and Jamie Poulter achieved an excellent 2nd place, beating Mike Knight who came in third. Jamie has been quoted as saying "nar nar ne nar nar" to Mike.

In the Team Towing category Phil and Pete AKA the Big Buoys don't understand what went wrong, as they finished in first place. unfortunately their are no pictures of the winners as my camera had a melt down at the crucial moment, still here are some nice pictures of the boats in action.

Round 2

Our next round was held at our own water for the first time at Crealy Park Cornwall it was a lovely day with the sun beating down on us and a stiff breeze to cool us down as well as making for some interesting towing. On the day Phil and Pete amazed themselves again by once again coming in first in the Team Towing category. Chris Poulter came in 1st in the singles towing with Jamie Poulter in 3rd and Margaret Winnett in 5th. No one from Newquay has taken part in the singles pushing yet.

Round 3

The next round was held at Sedgemoor, where Chris and Jamie Poulter had a good day, with Chris coming in 5th and Jamie in 4th in the singles pulling round. Then the pair teaming up as the Bugsier boys and pulling a third out of the hat. Phil, Pete and Margaret were absent from this round for the first time ever.

Round 4

Hosted by Yeovil Model Warship Association. Well what can I say about this one, extremely windy that's what! Even so the Newquay mob were there in force once more. Excellent results again with the Big Buoys once more coming 1st in the team event. This would have been a great victory, if it was not for the fact that they were the only ones who managed to complete all of their rounds, with everyone else falling foul of the weather or mechanical failure. In the singles towing Chris once again came in 4th, Jamie in 5th and Margaret bringing up the rear in 6th position.

In the singles towing Jamie Chris and Margaret finished in 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively with 49, 49, & 39 points. Chris and Jamies positions were decided on who had the higher discard score.

Round 2

Exeter model boat club hosted this years second round and another day of fine weather (honest) Every one turned up to a soggy Crealy park and promptly hid under the nearest gazebo, while the decision to go ahead or not was carried out. The news came back that we would carry on but operate the boats and judge competitors from inside the gazebos even if the rain stopped, this would keep it fair for everyone throughout the day. Despite the weather the day went quite well with the exception that one of the competitors boats sank, only to resurface under its own power a minute later (sorry no picture), and my camera started playing up so I cant show the prize winners. Newquay club members did well again with Jamie Poulter coming in first in the singles pulling, Margaret second and Jamie's dad Chris in third place. Phil Winnett and Pete Thatcher (The Big Buoys) got third in the team event.

These barges give me that sinking feelingMargaret dragging the tow boat around.Jamies got a lot of bottle! The Big Buoys get to grips with Exeters huge tow called funnily enough, Exeter. The Bugsier Boys complete the harbour turn. And the final task, docking.

Round 3

Sedgemoor's Apex Lake was the setting on a nice dry day but with a stiff breeze. because of the wind it was a fairly high scoring day for everyone, but a good day none the less.

Margaret Winnett came in third in the singles towing event and The Big Buoys (Phil Winnett & Pete Thatcher) shocked themselves by getting a second place team tow result.

Margarets arch nemisis (its that boat again)big boat tight tight turn, not a good combination!Phil and Pete lining up for the harbour turnLook Pete we've won a box of chockies!Hey i got chockies too!

Round 4

Yeovil was the setting for the final round of tug towing after Shepton Mallets pond suffered from a lack of water problem. It was a dry but breezy day on arrival and spirits were high as the day went ahead. It was an interesting day because the wind was blowing everyone off course and because of that it had to be rebuilt several times.

At the end of the day it was another good result for Newquay as Margaret finished in third place again on the day in the singles towing category and Phil & Pete (The Big Buoys) shockingly won 2nd in the team towing event.

Margaret despite a disasterous round, finishes in 3rd on the day       Phil & Pete bag a second place on the day and win a purple cheese.

Final results

Well it has been another good year for the Newquay Club with Margaret winning second place overall in the singles towing category and Phil and Pete winning their first trophy for 3rd place in the team towing. Next year I can only hope we do as well again or better, only time will tell.

Avery pleased Margaret takes home a Second place trophy in the singles championship.       Pete & Phil Take home their first trophy in the team towing championship.

Our first Cornwall tug towing competition

On the 21st of August we held our first tug towing competition at Cornwall's Crealy park. Unfortunately mainly due to a clash with another show in the area the turn out was a little disappointing, never the less the show must go on even if their are only 6 entrants. At least the sun was shining and everyone was in good spirits. Chris Poulter came in 1st in singles towing and 2nd in pushing, Jamie Poulter got a first in singles towing despite losing his superstructure on one round and together they finished 2nd in the team towing event. Phil Winnet finished singles pushing in 3rd and 1st with Pete Thatcher in team towing. 1st place pushing and 3rd place singles towing went to Richard Bowden (Kenwith Castle MBC). We would like to thank Richard for the efforts he went to and the loan of the barges and pusher tug on the day.
